Today in class we finished up our color wheel projects. They are looking great! I can't wait to see them at our critique on Tuesday! You have had enough time in class to complete this project but if you didn't, finish it on your own. It is due at the BEGINNING of class and must be part of the critique to be counted on time. Inspiration FridayFor our inspiration Friday we learned all about Free Art Friday which is a global art movement where artists put out art work and a clue and people find and get to keep the work. The artist and the community benefit. Atlanta has a huge Free Art Friday following and the WHS art club will be participating in some Free Art Friday programs here at Wheeler. More information about that coming soon! Reminders:Don't forget sketchbook #4 (hand lettering) is due on Tuesday

Today in class we completed our monochromatic paintings. You should have had more than enough time to complete it! I will post some pictures of our work soon. Sketchbook Assignment #4-Hand LetteringOur sketchbook assignment this week has to do with hand lettering and the importance of the written word in art. Check out the specifics of the project by clicking on the Sketchbook buttons to the right of the blog page. Creative color wheel projectThis week we are starting our creative color wheel assignment. You can use any materials you select. Your color wheel should be original, in correct color order and able to be displayed (not food). I can't wait to see what you come up with!
Thanks to everyone who came out to Open House last night! Today in class we continued our monochromatic designs by adding shades (color plus black) and tones (color plus grey) along with the tints (color plus white) that we did yesterday. These should be wrapped up by Monday at the end of class. Don't forget sketchbook assignment 3 is due Monday! I can't wait to see your collection of related objects. Make sure you are looking at the objects while you draw them. On Monday we will start our color wheel project! Remember you can use the material of your choice so start planning now! For more details about the project refer to the sheet you received in class today. Today our inspiration comes from Tiny Doors Atl If you have a chance go around and find these doors around town, they are very exciting to see! Today in class we started learning how to critique our own art work and the work of others. Critique is a slow but rewarding process and our style of critique and our ability to critique will change and improve throughout the semester. There are so many methods for critiquing art work and we are going to try many of them. All of the methods we will use for critique are designed to get you thinking about the work you create and the work of other artists. By the end of the semester you will be able to effectively discuss art with confidence. Shape ShoesToday we turned in our shape shoe project. If you did not turn in your work get it in as soon as possible to avoid losing points daily. Look for some of the wonderful pieces on twitter @lisacaseyart Color TheoryWe began our unit on color today. Check out the video clips we watched if you were absent or want to watch again. We painted a color wheel today. This will count as a quiz grade so make sure you complete it and turn it in. If you need an extra copy, find it here:
Your sidewalk crack sketches are due TODAY! We will discuss them in class, I am excited to see what you designed using the lines and shapes you were given. Remember to get in the habit of keeping your sketchbook with you and working in it daily. Your assigned sketch is due every Monday and you should have more than enough time in class to complete it if you are using your time wisely. Sketchbook 3-Recording a series of common objectsOur sketch this week is inspired by artist Lee John Phillips who has spent years visually recording every item in his grandfather's tool shed. Every item means each screw, nut and bolt. Your job this week is to fill a page (2 pages if your sketchbook is small) with a series of related objects (things in your kitchen drawer, items on your bathroom counter, contents of your purse, things in the console of your car, etc.) The items should be proportional to each other (the size of one should be correct compared to the size of the other. In other words a toothbrush should not be drawn the same size as a hair dryer ) and you should be looking at the items as you draw. Remember how much more accurate your oreo drawing in class was when you were actually looking at an oreo? Closely study and look at the object as you work. You do not have to color the items but add visual interest (work in pen or shade your finished drawings). https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07kqwjf/p07kr3l3 REMINDER-SHAPE SHOE PROJECTS ARE DUE AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS WEDNESDAYWe are continuing on our exploration of SHAPE. Today we finished up line with a line variety warm up. And you should be almost done with the contour drawing of your shoe. We started the slow process today of cutting out each shape to construct the shoe out of cut paper. We will continue to work on this process for the next several days.
Shoes as Fine ArtCheck out this video about an art exhibit focused on shoe design. SHAPEWe are finishing up LINE today and moving on to SHAPE. Make sure you can define the difference between line and shape. We worked on the grid drawing method and enlarged a contour drawing of a shoe. We will use these drawings to create a pattern for making paper shapes that will become a 2D paper version of our shoe. Today measured off a 2"x2" grid over our line drawing and then enlarged it to a 3" x3" grid. This is another drawing technique (like upside down drawing) that will help you get proportions accurate. Today in class we continued our practice of contour lines by creating a monoprint of our hand photographs. Make sure you have turned in your completed project for credit. Continue to practice with the dip pen to get better line control.
For our warm up today we talked about how art can convey emotions and feelings. We texted the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and asked them to send us art that showed a feeling or subject we were thinking of. It is interesting to see what they select compared to what we were expecting them to send. Try it with other subjects or feelings. Just text 572-51 and say "Send me..." and see what you get! Sketchbook Assignment #2-Sidewalk Crack This week you are working on creating an image from a sidewalk crack. You should draw directly on the sidewalk crack you were given in class. If you did not receive one it is your responsibility to pick one up during class. Take your time and really LOOK to see what you could create based on the lines you are given. Use your imagination. It should be done in color and look like a completed drawing. DO NOT TURN IN A PENCIL DRAWING. I can't wait to see what you create! These are due at the beginning of class next Monday.
Today we worked to complete our Line Study project. If you did not finish in class remember it is due on Monday. Project guidelines are attached for your review.
Your first sketchbook assignment is also due at the beginning of class on Monday. Review the inspiration video which was linked earlier this week. The assignment guidelines are attached here:
Friday Art Inspiration Each Friday we will explore the work of a past or current artist. Today we learned about a street artist who goes by the name "Clet" and is changing the face of street signs in Florence Italy. Enjoy the video link below. Today we reviewed the element of LINE. We did blind contour drawing as our warm up today. Check out the video clip below to review the process of blind contour drawing and continue to practice. We began our line project. See the attached checklist to make sure you are on the right track. Reminders-Bring in your signed syllabus!! First sketchbook assignment is due on Monday.
