This will be our last project of the semester. For seniors, any work that you want to be factored into your grade needs to be turned in to me by Tuesday May 11th-tomorrow! For everyone else, you have until Friday to complete this and any other work you want credit for. Since this is our last project, we will be focused on what your art can do to spread happiness. Throughout the semester we have learned basic skills and to wrap up the class I thought it would be fun to use those skills to make art and bring art to others. We will be working this week on mail art. Mail art is a movement that started in the 1950's and continues currently. Artists will create either pieces that can be mailed or create art on envelopes to be sent-sometimes to people they know and sometimes to museums, strangers, exhibitions, open artists calls and other artists interested in an exchange. I am going to post a couple of articles and videos below if you are interested in learning more about the process and how you could participate in mail art exhibitions and exchanges around the world. For our project your job is to create a small piece of art-your choice of subject, medium and size (although it has to fit inside of an envelope). You will place it inside of an envelope and you must also decorate your envelope (also your choice of medium and subject matter). Send me a picture of both your artwork and your finished envelope. Then your final job is to mail it out. In this time of quarantine, someone you know will be thrilled to receive your creation in the mail. Things to consider: Your viewer (who are you designing this for?) Color choice (what mood are you setting?) Subject (what do you want your artwork to convey?) Space (what parts of the envelope will be included, how will you use the area?) Check out the envelope examples below along with the history of mail art. I can't wait to see what you create and I can't wait for your recipient to receive a bit of art joy in the mail! click on this link to learn more: https://stamps.org/news/c/collecting-insights/cat/stamp-art/post/what-is-mail-art-2020 More info and ideas here:

"May the 4th be with you" I am not a huge Star Wars fan but I live with several so I know May 4th in Star Wars land is a fun day to watch all of the movies and do whatever else Star Wars Fans do:-) We are having Star Wars themed snacks at my house today. I thought it would be fun to get some Art History covered and have some Star Wars fun. Our project this week is to study a group of Star Wars themed art parodies. Your job is to find the real masterpiece the parody is based on. For each piece, tell me the Title, artist and three facts about the artist. If you are wondering how you will figure out what the parodies are based upon, make some observations about the work. Is it a portrait? Landscape? How would you describe it using elements and principles of art? When you have developed a good description based on the visual evidence you have do a google search with your description. If you have described it well it will not be difficult to locate. Email me your list by Friday. We have one more project after this. Remember that if you have any zeros in Synergy, work on completing that first. That will bring your grade up more than anything else!
I hope you all had a great weekend! I enjoyed seeing some of your pet projects!! If you have not turned in your project please email it to me today. This week we have a very fun challenge that was put out across America from the Getty Museum. They challenged everyone to select a piece of artwork and recreate it with objects and people around your house. The results have been amazing! For our project this week we are going to take part in the challenge. Do a little research and find a famous work of art that you will recreate. It will NOT be done with traditional art materials, in other words you aren't repainting, re-sculpting or re-drawing it. The materials you select will not be permanently attached, this is a temporary art installation. There is a video below that has a ton of examples that the Getty has received and below that some photo examples. Keep in mind that your "art" might include real people, household objects, barbies or action figures or even laundry. Get creative. Once you have recreated your artwork take a picture of the finished piece and send it to me along with an image of the art that inspired you. You must also send a photo/selfie of you with the objects you used so I know it is your original work. You can also send it to the Getty on Instagram or twitter and join the nationwide challenge online. I can't wait to see your creations! Email them to me by Friday. Good morning! This week we will have one big project to work on rather than a daily task. I hope you will enjoy this one and it is designed to make a difference so do your best! You can read the details and project guidelines here:
There are examples included in the project guidelines and website links so make sure you view the entire document. You can email me your finished pieces by Friday. I will upload them to the blog and the best ones will be sent to the selected shelters to directly impact the animal you select. I can't wait to see what you create!
Today's video is all about the importance of the doodle. I think using drawing to take notes and organize thoughts is super important. Watch this and let me know what you think! Remember we don't have assignments on Fridays so take time tomorrow to catch up. If you have your log or other assignments to turn in you can email them to me: [email protected] One of our VA comp skills is to create something out of clay. If you continue on an art pathway consider signing up for ceramics where you will learn to create on a potter's wheel. Check out this video from Jon the Potter-(one of my favorites) he is going to explain how to center clay, a skill that is essential to making pottery. This is a great video about how museums are coping with the current crisis and how art is needed now more than ever. Good morning! I hope you all had a restful Spring Break and are ready to get back into a school routine. This week will be a little different than the previous three. I will be posting a video each day with different art topics. Your job is to watch the video and write a journal entry for each day explaining what you have learned. The videos will cover a variety of art topics. VA comp is designed to give you an overview of art mediums and experiences so I want to make sure we cover all of the areas we are missing in class (clay, printmaking, sculpture, etc.) There will be four videos this week, one posted each day until Thursday since we have moved to the four day assignment week. You can turn in your log on Thursday or Friday. Logs turned in after Friday may not bring your grade up and therefore will not be entered unless they are exceptional so do not fall behind. Each video is short and each log entry is just a few sentences. Do your best! The log format can be found here:
For those of you below passing...For those of you below passing I recommend replacing the zeros you have currently in Synergy. That is what is holding your grade down. Rather than start a new assignment, complete the old ones first. If you need me to alter the project to meet the materials you have at home please let me know. Most of the missing assignments however are sketch assignments which can all be found on the blog. If I don't hear from you at all the grade will remain as it is today. If you need help, please let me know. I am here to help you! I will be contacting parents this week via mail to provide them with a paper copy of your grades to this point if you are below a 70. Remember that you will not magically pass. If you are below a 70 and you do not turn in anything else you will stay below a 70. Monday VideoCheck out this unusual art technique and material from a street artist in Amsterdam. Write about what you learn on your weekly response log. Good morning! After the announcement yesterday that students can take the grade they had on March 13th or continue working to bring the grade up I wanted to address that and give you some information that will hopefully be helpful to you.
First-thank you to everyone who has kept up with their assignments and who have been working throughout this time. I will be entering those grades into Synergy today. If you are happy with your grade and do not plan to continue with the assignments, that is up to you and everyone is in a different situation so I understand, but for those of you hoping to continue on an art pathway or even take anther art class, I would consider continuing. Everything you do will improve your skills. This is especially true for students with a really low grade who are hoping to take an upper level class. Remember work ethic matters. After Spring Break I will continue to post things to the blog and you are encouraged to do them and turn them in if you are working to improve your grade. Grades can only go up! Having said that, if you turn in things that won't improve your grade I will not be entering them-so don't waste time on mediocre work, it will not count. Turn in things that you have clearly spent time to make excellent! For those of you failing, you must turn in assignments! You will fail the class if you are below a 70-this is not a pass -fail situation. Remember if you fail, you cannot take another art class without retaking VA Comp first. If you are missing sketch assignments they can be found on the right hand side of the blog (the bottom of the blog from your phone). Please let me know if you have any questions. I am here to help you. Don't forget to turn in the sketches for this week too! Have a wonderful Spring Break, unplugged. I am so sad to know that school is out for the rest of the year. We did not get to start or finish so many things I had hoped for you to do. For the seniors, my heart is breaking for you but know that good things are coming and you will be celebrated! There are a lot of questions right now about so many events and grades and we do not have the answers yet. Your job in the meantime is to keep working, keep smiling and to stay safe. Next week is Spring Break and after that I will let you know the format of the rest of the class. Keep turning in your work, in this class and all the others.
