"I hope you all had a great weekend! I will be back to posting ceramics videos for your enjoyment tomorrow but I also want to put this challenge out to you this week in case you are interested in participating. I think you will enjoy it! This challenge put out across America from the Getty Museum. They challenged everyone to select a piece of artwork and recreate it with objects and people around your house. The results have been amazing! Do a little research and find a famous work of art that you will recreate. It will NOT be done with traditional art materials, in other words you aren't repainting, re-sculpting or re-drawing it. The materials you select will not be permanently attached, this is a temporary art installation. There is a video below that has a ton of examples that the Getty has received and below that some photo examples. Keep in mind that your "art" might include real people, household objects, barbies or action figures or even laundry. Get creative. Once you have recreated your artwork take a picture of the finished piece and send it to me along with an image of the art that inspired you. You can also send it to the Getty on Instagram or twitter and join the nationwide challenge online. I can't wait to see your creations! Our last video this week continues to focus on how potters make a living through clay. This studio creates high end dinner ware for upscale restaurants. The process is fun to watch. Enjoy and have a great weekend! This is a great example of a potter working and running their own business based solely on one person. Tomorrow we will look at a pottery business that relies on multiple employees. This week the videos will focus on how potters sell their work. Today's video looks at a pottery tour where several studios work together to host a weekend event and buyer travel from one pottery to the next over the course of the 3 days to view and purchase unique pieces. For today's video I am unboxing a mug I ordered from Jon the Potter and showing a few other favorites. I hope you enjoy! This is our last mug video for the week. Remember we don't have anything on Fridays so use that time to catch up. If you have anything to turn in please email me. I hope you all have a great weekend! This is probably the most straightforward explanation of how to make a mug using the slab method. She uses a Starbucks paper cup for her template-the same way I made the mug templates that are in our classroom. If you want to make a well made mug by hand, this is the technique to use. This is a unique method for attaching a bottom to a slab built cup. Hi Everyone! I hope you all had a great Spring Break and were able to unplug and get some rest from virtual school. A few updates: I will continue to be posting clay videos for you to watch as I think this is the most practical way for you to learn about pottery without actually doing it. You don't have to keep a log but those of you continuing with pottery next year may want to. I feel like you will learn a lot and will be able to put these practices to good use once we return to the studio. If you are continuing, it will be helpful to keep an idea journal or sketchbook so that you can easily refer back to what you are learning. I will be posting the videos daily. Even if you aren't turning in a log, let me hear from you!! Comment on the video or shoot me an email just so I know you are doing well at home. PLEASE submit your art selfie and your stack challenge. I would love to post all of the art selfies so we can see everyone so make sure you get that to me today. Don't worry if your match wasn't perfect. HAHA-My best match is with Louis XV and the more I look at it I can see that maybe he and I do share some common features, so send them in no matter how they turned out! If you are wondering about your pottery that is still at school...once things return to normal and I am allowed in the building, I will figure out a way to get the work back to you. Some of our pieces will still need to be fired and possibly glazed so I am hoping to make that happen for all of you. I have no idea where our shipment of new glazes ended up but that is on my list this week to track it down-stayed tuned. This week's videos will all focus on making mugs, both by hand and on the wheel. This was a project we had planned to do and enjoy together. So get out your favorite mug and enjoy a fun beverage while you watch this week. The first video is Jon the Potter-he does not talk at all in this one but you will learn a lot. My big take away was how much better his clay extruder works compared to our clay extruder that only Jamon can actually push easily. Let me know what you think! |
